Gardeners told growing own food is educational

Homeowners looking for a project to undertake over the summer may wish to consider growing their own food.

According to the Soil Association, growing food in a garden can be both fun and educational, which could make the activity ideal for something to do with the kids during the school holidays.

Clio Turton, spokeswoman for the organisation, stated that home gardening can be a particularly good activity for those who have an interest in where food comes from.

"Anything you pick and eat straight away is going to taste great," she said.

"Anyone can grow herbs in pots on their patios if they don't have a big garden."

Ms Turton advised home gardeners to concentrate on growing high-value produce such as sweetcorn, peas and herbs in order to save money on buying them in a grocery store.

She was speaking shortly after the Royal Horticultural Society conducted a study which found that children who are involved in gardening are stronger learners than those who are not. ADNFCR-2810-ID-800007776-ADNFCR
