Gardeners advised how to avoid hosepipe ban
Householders in the north-west of England have been handed advice on how to care for their gardens while the region is subject to a hosepipe ban.
Earlier this month, United Utilities announced that it is bringing in the ban because of a lack of rainfall, to protect the remaining water supplies.
Nigel Colborn, a gardening expert writing for the Daily Mail, stated that gardens can look "magnificent", even without the use of a hosepipe.
"You can divert from waste pipes and gutter downpipes into butts or tanks using easily installed kits," he said.
"Recycled water is fine for plants, provided it doesn't contain harmful chemicals."
The expert added that water from washing machines and dishwashers should not be used in gardens, because it is likely to contain detergents that can harm plants.
Kris Collins, gardening editor at Amateur Gardening magazine, recently stated that homeowners in the north-west are likely to be angered by the hosepipe ban, because many already conserve water.
