Garden dining increase leads to more spending
More and more householders are spending time in their gardens for activities such as cooking and eating.
Charlotte Rowe, garden designer and fully-registered member of the Society of Garden Designers, stated that despite garden dining being around for 40 years, it is now becoming a more popular pastime for homeowners.
This means they are spending more money on making their outside space more attractive and functional.
The most recent British Retail Consortium-KPMG Retail Sales Monitor indicated that spending on outdoor furniture increased during June 2010.
Ms Rowe explained that people are increasingly thinking of their gardens as an extension to the house itself.
She said: "You can get really fantastic awnings now and really nice parasols and quite strong large ones - so even if it does rain you have no problems with that."
Barbeques are also becoming more popular, according to the garden designer, who recommended Danish designs in particular to homeowners considering installing one outside their residence.
