Fire chief issues wood flooring warning

A fire chief in the US has issued a warning to homeowners regarding their wood flooring.

The Newark Advocate recently spoke to fire captain for the area Ron Walsh, who claimed that the cold weather at this time of year prompts residents of Licking County to start burning logs.

However, he warned homeowners of the risk of chimney fires, where the residue left inside the fixture sets alight.

"Obviously, we see more this time of year due to using chimneys and wood burners more," captain Walsh said.

A range of tips were offered and wood flooring was put forward as a fixture that needs to be protected.

"The immediate area in front of a fireplace … should not have a rug, carpet or exposed wood flooring," said the publication.

This comes after the LaSalle News Tribune reported on a wood flooring fire at the historic Westclox building in the city.
