Experts issue DIY safety warning
As many people turn to DIY during the current turbulent economic climate, a group of experts has warned that basic safety equipment should not be overlooked.
The College of Optometrists has issued guidelines stating that many amateur DIY enthusiasts risk seriously damaging their eyes through a lack of adequate protection.
It claims that most DIY-related eye injuries are due to foreign bodies entering the area during activities such as carpentry, repairing and decorating.
The college also cites figures which state nearly 90 per cent of people do not use the appropriate protection when carrying out potentially dangerous DIY tasks.
Spokesperson for the group Dr Susan Blakeney stated the importance of guarding the eyes against damage.
"When you buy eyewear protection check it confirms to the European Standard BSEN 166. If you wear spectacles or contact lenses, these will not protect your eyes sufficiently," she said.
The warning comes after a survey conducted by Halifax indicated that many young people lacked the most basic DIY skills.
