DIYers warned to be cautious when using heat appliances

Anyone carrying out home improvements to their property has been advised to exercise caution if they intend to use heat appliances.

This follows an incident over the weekend in which a man set fire to his home in Nailsea with a heat gun after attempting to strip paint, the Weston Mercury reports.

The unnamed homeowner had been trying to remove old paint from his fascia boards, but caused a fire in the roof of the property.

Although firefighters praised his quick thinking in preventing the fire from spreading by aiming his hose at the flames, they advised home improvers to take great care with heat guns.

When using these appliances to strip fascia boards, it is important to fill in any gaps beforehand to stop heat or sparks getting into the roof space and causing a fire.

Earlier this month, DIY expert Craig Phillips urged home improvers to beware of asbestos when carrying out repairs to their property.
