DIYers warned of asbestos danger

Householders who are looking to carry out home improvements over the summer months have been warned about the potential dangers of asbestos in their properties.

According to television presenter and DIY expert Craig Phillips, asbestos is common in houses built as late as 1989.

The former Big Brother winner added that homeowners can identify the harmful material by looking at its texture and colour.

"White-grey is most common, and it's quite a rigid board looking a bit like a cement board," he said. "They also come in blue and pink colours."

Mr Phillips added that property owners can get further advice from the British Lung Foundation website, which will be able to inform them whether or not the material in their home is asbestos.

Figures released recently by the foundation show that as many as two-thirds of British householders are not confident of being able to identify asbestos while carrying out home improvements in their property.
