DIYers told to update bathrooms

Householders looking for a summer home improvement project have been advised to consider using technology to touch up their bathrooms.

Essential Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom stated that using neutral tones in the decor of the room can help to make it a peaceful space.

Ronnie Whelan, editor of the specialist publication, said adding some 21st century gadgets to the bathroom can produce a modern-looking room.

"Finishing touches such as mood and task lighting, chromatherapy, mp3 players, televisions that masquerade as mirrors or remote-controlled taps, will bring your bathroom up to date," she said.

Ms Whelan was speaking shortly after luxury retailer Harrods put a hugely expensive bath on sale at its London store.

The Florentine luxury furnishings firm Baldi has created the rock crystal tub and it is available for the princely sum of £570,000.

A survey by bathroom company Buster recently found that six out of ten adults now choose to take a shower rather than having a bath.
