DIYers told to build own compost bin
Homeowners with an interest in DIY have been told to have a go at creating their own compost bin.
According to Sally Hall, a writer for the Independent, this could also be a good project to help get children more involved in the environment.
She said: "If you are a DIY enthusiast, old planks can be knocked together and redundant carpet can be put on top to get it good and hot inside."
That way, Ms Hall added, kids will be able to see for themselves what happens to waste food and learn more about how it is possible to live a sustainable, eco-friendly life.
Ms Hall said other ways to get children interested in the environment could be to grow organic food such as tomatoes and courgettes in the garden.
Carrying out tasks like these could even have psychological benefits, according to leading psychologist Professor Geoff Beattie, who stated that spending time in a garden can help to make people more positive.
