DIYers told lighting is the key to design

Home improvers who want to change the design of their property have been advised that lighting is the key element.

Interior designer Shane Inman recommended laying wood flooring diagonally across a room, because this will help to make a room look more spacious.

However, he stated that lighting was the most important factor for DIYers to take into account, advising them to add lighting in and under cabinets to emphasise shelving space.

Writing for Traverse City Business News, he added: "Place lights close to walls and get a scalloping effect on the wall, or place lighting away from walls and get a glowing effect."

Mr Inman also advised householders to repaint the walls of their home, as this is one of the most cost-effective methods of transforming any room.

Tommy Walsh, the former star of hit TV show Ground Force, recently told the Sun that home improvers should not apply two coats of paint to achieve the best finish.
