DIYers 'can fix clanking pipes'

Householders who are sick of the noise of clanking pipes in their property have been given expert advice on how to solve the problem.

DIY expert Jeff Howell stated that the issue should be "relatively easy" to fix.

Writing in his advice column for the Daily Telegraph, he explained that the noise is common in many homes, due to the layout of the pipework.

He said DIY fans could stop the clanking by ensuring the pipes are securely clipped to the wall.

"It would also be a good idea to box it in (if this has not already been done), packing the boxing with glassfibre insulation to deaden the sound of flowing water," he added.

Mr Howell has also offered householders with decking in their gardens advice on how to maintain the finish of the wood.

He said using an oil will give a better finish than a varnish, but that the process will need to be carried out every year to prevent the wood from decaying.
