DIY is 'trendier'
The recession has increased the popularity of DIY, in addition to making it "trendier", according to one expert.
Editor of self-build advice magazine Build It Anna-Marie DeSouza believes that the current financial climate has highlighted the importance of the home.
She predicts another "promising year" for the home improvement market, prompted in part by the rise of DIY-based reality TV shows.
"Homemaking is having a revival at the moment, so there's nothing trendier than partaking in a bit of DIY or mending and replacing something," she said.
Her sentiments were echoed by research from Everest, which found that 18 million Britons reported they are planning to conduct some kind of home improvement work over the next year.
The rise of DIY has been hard on professionals Ms DeSouza claimed, with more people taking up projects themselves rather than hiring someone to conduct renovations.
She went on to urge homeowners to try their hand at DIY, advising that smaller tasks such as painting or changing door handles are often a good starting point.
