DIY home improvers 'should be more ambitious'

DIY enthusiasts considering installing home improvements such as wood flooring have been called upon to be more ambitious in their renovation projects.

Anna-Marie Desouza, editor at DIY publication Build It, has stated that many homeowners are underestimating their own abilities when it comes to making changes around the house.

She noted that although jobs involving boilers and major electrical work should be left to the experts, there are "hundreds" of smaller tasks which are relatively simple to accomplish.

Ms Desouza said the more home improvement work people carry out, the more confident they will become, allowing them to potentially save money on hiring professionals in future.

She also advised: "Remember that a job shared is a job halved - it's always sensible to work in pairs, especially if any ladder work is involved."

Last month, Everest published research showing that 18 million Britons plan to improve their homes during the next 12 months, with changes to floors, walls and exteriors all being considered.
