Cost of green home improvements 'no longer prohibitive'

Householders looking to carry out green home improvements have been informed that the cost of such projects is "no longer prohibitive".

According to editor of Real Homes Michael Holmes, less than £3,000 can enable a property owner to fit cavity wall insulation in their residence or to install a new boiler.

Mr Holmes - who is also a spokesman for The National Home Improvement Show - added that roof insulation could help a homeowner to save as much as 20 per cent off the cost of their annual heating bill.

"The installation of a secondary glazing system can be fitted easily by anybody who is doing DIY to the window frame," he said.

This costs around £700 for an entire property and could result in 40 per cent of savings to energy bills each year, he explained.

Mr Holmes was speaking shortly after the Energy Saving Trust revealed that £3,000 is enough for many householders to be able to green up their home.
