Coalition supports green home improvements

The UK's new coalition government has stated that it will support green home improvements.

According to a document released today (May 20th 2010) by the government, laying out its plans for the next five years, green home improvements will be protected, despite the need to make public spending cuts.

The government said: "Through our Green Deal, we will encourage home energy efficiency improvements paid for by savings from energy bills."

It also stated its intention to reduce carbon emissions in public sector buildings, as well as in other businesses, but it is not yet clear how it plans to fund the green home improvements.

This news is likely to be welcomed by Friends of the Earth, as the group recently stated that the new prime minister David Cameron and his chancellor George Osborne must protect green home improvements from public spending cuts.

Friends of the Earth's executive director Andy Atkins said the new administration should take the opportunity to create a low-carbon society.
