Accidents on the rise as people turn to DIY

Homeowners trying to save money by conducting their own home improvements will lead to a rise in the number of DIY-related injuries, one expert has claimed.

Spokesman for the National Home Improvement Show Michael Holmes said that over-ambitious renovators often overestimate their skills and cause accidents.

He claimed the most common types of DIY injury occur due to the misuse of power tools. In addition to accidents, poor home improvements can lead to several other problems and may even require fixing by a professional.

Mr Holmes believed that inexperienced renovators should attempt to "get their DIY legs" by beginning with smaller, simple tasks.

He said: "Poorly executed DIY can have more than an effect on a homeowner's health and reduce the value of a property as much as five per cent."

The news comes in the wake of an amateur DIY enthusiast from Manchester causing an explosion up after a home improvement project went awry earlier in the month, causing tile sealer to ignite.
