Homeowners encouraged to pick wood flooring carefully

People who are buying wood flooring have been urged to make sure it is appropriate to the room in which it is being fitted.

According to Angie Hicks, founder of Angie's List, solid wood flooring is very beautiful but cannot be used everywhere.

Speaking to ABC, she therefore recommended that homeowners use engineered wood flooring in certain areas.

"Engineered hardwoods are more important to be used on slabs, or below grade flooring where there is more humidity," she commented.

Ms Hicks said this is because in these areas, there is a greater likelihood of the floor expanding and contracting.

She added that homeowners who want wood flooring in their property should ensure it is installed by a professional.

"It's not really a DIY project," Ms Hicks stated.

The advice comes after a report by the British Retail Consortium and KPMG showed that flooring sales in the UK remained healthy in November 2009.
