Engineered wood flooring recommended for herringbone patterns

Engineered wood flooring is likely to be the best option for people looking to lay a traditional herringbone-patterned floor in their home, according to a DIY expert.

The herringbone-patterned floor has long been popular with homeowners trying to give their property a distinctive look.

A Guardian reader is keen to install one and wrote to the newspaper to ask for advice about fitting an affordable and quiet floor in their flat.

Responding to the query, DIY author Bridget Bodoano said it is possible to find affordable engineered wood flooring in the herringbone pattern and that it has several advantages over other surfaces.

"Engineered wood is more expensive than laminates, but it's better-looking. It's also less prone to warping than real wood floorboards," she explained.

Her advice echoes that given recently by Angie Hicks of Angie's List, who recommended fitting engineered wood flooring in rooms where the environment means floorboards are likely to expand and contract.
