Consider engineered wood flooring 'in the basement'
Engineered wood flooring has been highlighted as a great surface for use in the lower levels of a house.
Megan Spaniol, writing for Livegreentwincities.com, consulted interior designer Greg Kraus of Otogawa Anschel Design-Build - an expert at green renovations.
He claimed it can be easy for homeowners to forget about the lowest and highest sections of their properties and set out some of the best surfaces to use in these areas.
"If unclad is too drab, consider exposed concrete with a smooth finish, or even engineered hardwood flooring. Also, avoid can lights, the blight of green designers like Kraus," said Ms Spaniol.
Mr Kraus added homeowners should try and avoid carpet, as some types of this material can be harmful to the environment, as well as human health.
A similar warning was recently issued by Abby Luby, a Poughkeepsie Journal columnist, who promoted wood floors for their lack of chemical treatments.
